Collect

Almighty God, you show to those who are in error the light of your truth so that they may return into the way of righteousness: grant to all who are admitted into the fellowship of Christ’s service that they may renounce those things that are contrary to their profession and follow all such things as are agreeable to it; through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

From the Passage The God of All Wisdom,

We are often quick to speak and slow to listen. We have treated Your glory as a simple equation and Your providence as a system to be mastered. Forgive us for the pride of our certainty and the shallowness of our hearts. When life is chaotic, we have often confused our lack of control with Your lack of care.

Lord of the Whirlwind, We bring before You those in our midst who sit today in the ashes. We pray for those facing “wicked” problems that have no easy answers—illness that does not heal, grief that does not lift, and transitions that feel like exile. We lift up a world in groanings: for the victims of malice, the displaced, and those who live in the shadow of destruction.

We look to Your Son, O Christ of Gethsemane, the only truly Blameless and Upright Man. We thank You that He did not remain distant, but entered our suffering. He learned obedience through what He suffered—not for His own sake, but for ours. He was the one who was truly forsaken so that we, in our darkness, might never be alone.

By Holy Spirit, our Comforter, help us to lament well. Protect us from the sin of bitter thoughts and the folly of reckless speech. Teach us to be patient in the “not knowing,” and keep us from speaking wrongly of You when we are in pain. Grant us the humility to recognise what is above our pay grade, and the faith to trust Your hand when we cannot trace Your plan.

We look forward to that Great Day when the Accuser is silenced forever, and You will wipe every tear from our eyes. Until then, keep us steadfast. Help us to know You—not just in the blessing, but in the storm.

In the name of Jesus Christ, our Great High Priest, Amen.
